Julia’s Pasta &
Tomato Basil Sauce
Recipe by Julia Baer
My dad and I love cooking (and eating) pasta, and we always create new variations
and combinations. This recipe is the basic sauce my dad always makes, to which we
usually add shrimp, sausage, meatballs, etc.
Though, the sauce is also delicious by
itself. Preparation time is ~30 mins, and serves 4-6 people.
Ingredients
- 1 can (8oz) of tomato sauce
- 1 can (32oz) of whole peeled tomatoes
- 1 box (1 lb) of any shape pasta
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 bunch of basil
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Garlic powder
- Red pepper flakes
- Salt & pepper
- 1 tsp - 1 tbsp sugar
- Grated Parmesean or Romano cheese
Instructions
- Dice 2 cloves of garlic.
- In a medium saucepan, add olive oil, diced garlic, and red pepper flakes (to taste). Cook for 60 seconds over medium heat (no longer, as to not burn garlic)
- Add 1 can of tomato sauce and 1 can of whole peeled tomatoes. Mash/cut tomatoes using a knife or potato masher
- Add in salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Chop up and add 1/2 of basil. Add 1 tsp to 1 tbsp of sugar (as needed)
- Cover and cook over medium heat until bubbles begin to surface, then turn down to low heat to simmer
- Boil 5 quarts of water in a large pot over high heat. When water reaches a rolling boil, add in 1 box (1 lb) of pasta. Stir occasionally and cook uncovered for ~10 minutes
- Strain pasta using a colander, and rinse thoroughly using cool water.
- Serve pasta and sauce in a bowl, add parmesan cheese and garnish with the other 1/2 of fresh basil.
